Biomass and Renewable Energy
With the mounting and anticipated future pressure to move towards renewable energy and non-carbon energy generation, Sega Inc. has built on our extensive power generation experience to provide solutions to our clients in determining and implementing renewable technologies into their generation portfolio. Sega Inc. has the ability to assist clients in the determination of the appropriate renewable energy alternative, from the myriad of options which include: biomass, landfill gas, waste-to-energy, wind, solar (thermal and PV) and hydrokinetic generation options. For biomass applications, Sega Inc. has the expertise to provide economic and technical support for biomass co-firing in existing wall-, tangential-, cyclone-, and stoker-fired boilers and biomass combustion in new CFB and BFB boilers.
Representative Projects:
- Alliant Energy, Ottumwa Generating Station, Ottumwa, Iowa
Sega Inc. acted as the EPC contractor to engineer, procure and construct a material handling system to co-fire coal and switchgrass. This was a demonstration plant funded by a DOE grant. The facility unloaded, shredded and pneumatically conveyed switchgrass to a 700-MW t-fired boiler.
- Alliant Energy, Waste-to-Energy Plant, Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Sega Inc. acted as the Owner’s Engineer to install a decommissioned biomass-to-energy plant from an independent power producer. The project included a waste handling facility, fluidized-bed gasifier, steam boiler, cooling system, 5-MW turbine generator, precipitator, ash handling system, and a 69-kV substation.
- University of Missouri, Columbia, Missouri
Sega Inc. is currently providing engineering services to install a new 150,000 lb/hr BFB boiler for the university heating plant. The boiler will burn 100% biomass (oak wood chips and other renewable fuels). Sega Inc. is also providing engineering services for the complete replacement and upgrade of the plant’s material handling system to handle coal, biomass and alternative fuels.
- Ameresco, Laubscher Meadows, Evansville, Indiana; McCarty Road, Houston, Texas and Jefferson City, Jefferson City, Missouri
Sega Inc. performed the detailed design engineering for the landfill gas piping and the balance of plant engineering for the gas cleanup and/or landfill gas reciprocating engines installed at these three projects.
- Columbia Water and Light, Columbia, Missouri
Sega Inc. provided permitting and conceptual design support for a biomass material handling system to allow oak wood chips to be blended (12-15% by weight) and burned with coal in two existing stoker boilers. The new biomass handling system is to be integrated with the existing coal handling system. The City of Columbia’s Title V permit was modified to allow for the co-firing of biomass material with coal.
- BFC Gas & Electric Waste-to-Energy Plant, Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Sega Inc. was the Owner’s Engineer to install a decommissioned biomass-to-energy plant for an independent power producer. The project included a biomass waste handling facility, fluidized-bed gasifier, steam boiler, cooling system, 5-MW turbine generator, precipitator, ash handling system, and a 69-kV substation.
- Eastern Illinois University, Renewable Energy Center, Charleston, Illinois
Sega Inc. is performing the engineering portion of an EPC contract. The renewable energy center is being designed to produce steam and electricity for the campus distribution systems and to replace the existing campus plant. The plant includes two 40,000 lb/hr biomass wood-fired gasifiers and steam generators, two 50,000 lb/hr natural gas boilers, steam turbine generator, material handling equipment, 20-kW Solar Photovoltaic system, backup fuel oil system, electrical switchgear and transformers, 69-kV substation, exhaust stacks, and associated plant auxiliaries.
- Rock Falls Electric Utilities, Rock Falls, Illinois
Sega Inc. provided a feasibility study for a Solar PV System, performance and installation specifications, installation of a “turnkey” photovoltaic roof-top system, solar panels, mounting system, and inverter system & web-based monitoring system.
