Steam Generation

The properties of steam power generation allow it to be used for many purposes. It can be used as a motive force to produce electricity, as a building heat source, as an industrial process phase, and more. Equipment that produces steam, and systems that use steam, need to be designed and managed by a specialist to ensure safe and efficient operation.

Sega Inc. is a recognized expert in boiler and steam power generation services. We have experience with large utility-grade steam generators, combined-cycle processes, industrial package boilers, gasification, and all the associated equipment and processes. We also leverage our experience in electrical generation to offer unique resources to cogeneration facilities.

We work with almost all fuel types including coal, oil, gas, wood, waste, and other renewables. We have hands-on experience with most steam generator technologies including pulverized coal, fluidized-bed (CFB and BFB), once-through, regenerative, super- and sub-critical, heat recovery (HRSG), and more. Our diverse experience includes serving utilities, universities, industrial plants, and facilities clients.

Representative Projects:

  • University of Kansas, Boiler Number 8 Replacement, Lawrence, Kansas
The project provided additional steam generation of 60,000 lbs/hr along with control upgrades to assist plant personnel with improved reliability and efficiencies. Sega Inc. provided engineering and construction services for upgrading the university boiler house to meet future campus heating needs. Sega Inc. also provided layout, equipment specifications, system design, construction specification, and plans in support of the following project components: foundation and structures, piping, electrical and control wiring, environmental permitting assistance, plant control upgrade, B&W boiler, and combustion control system.

  • University of Missouri, Gas-Fired Boiler Addition, Columbia, Missouri
Sega Inc. was the design engineer for the installation of a 220,000 lb/hr natural gas-fired boiler. The project included the demolition of existing field-erected boilers and replacement with a new package boiler. Sega Inc. provided planning services, specifications, and drawings. Sega Inc. also provided engineering services to the University for the following: steam and electric generation capacity (20 year master plan), plant-wide 480-V electrical system upgrade, power plant control room chilled water system, and plant-wide DC electrical system.
